Forum appearance

The default theme being used by the newly updated forum displays the users' profiles (avatars, etc.) on the right side of the forum.
Some folks have expressed a preference for the old arrangement with user profiles on the left. I can make the changes if there is a consensus.

Right - I'm more interested in the content. I'll glance at the user info but most time I read the comments first.

Does it matter? Human brains are used to ignoring irrelevant information anyway.

Probably not, but then again what does - apart from the price of beer.

@fgagnon - any chance of moving the "Board Index...." Line below the "User Control...." line

When I'm wanting to navigate via the Board Index line, I keep falling down the "View your posts" burrow - which has nothing in that I didn't already know

That's another of the features I, too, do not care for with the new board 'style', but not sure your suggestion will be any better than just being different.
It's something else I will look into; along with missing the "Next topic / Previous topic" option at top & bottom of each thread. :|

Agreed, left (fear of change you know).

Also, please don't disable the "View your posts" button. I use those.

Always mindful of the Caveats-du-Fred ("Re: forum changes - One step at a time"...), is it just in my browser (Firefox/IE) where ever since the profiles have been shifted to the left (thank you very much) the main forum icon appears preternaturally elongated?

Image

Not that anyone besides Nikos and myself actually liked that icon anyway, but one assumes it's not actually meant to appear to be eternally falling out of a time-travelling wormhole warp field.

That, and the forum email-notifications still seem to come from a blank address, which wreaks havoc with client filters, never mind the whole impressionistic nature of disembodied voices speaking to me (which is enough of a problem in real life, lord knows).

(If you were really bored you could also look into removing the reiterated name labels on posts - in the profile section, and then again [unnecessarily] repeated in the post-header itself. Only if you're bored, like. You never know when another New England snow storm is going to accost your day and ruin a perfectly good pair of loafers. Do men still wear loafers, or am I just regressing back to the 1930's? Maybe they have a different name for them these days. "...one step at a time...")

The reason for the giant logo image is simple: phpBB3 has "image sets" defined inside its themes, so just changing an image file will still keep the original dimensions of an image. Rather stupid, but maybe it makes actually "designing" a theme easier.

On the other hand, my good old optimizations of the board view are useless now. Sigh.
(At least userscripts.org has neat add-ins for this one as well.)

Well, the icon image was fine (i.e., squared) when the board first switched over - I only mentioned it now as the change seemed to coincide with Fred's tinkering.

Yeah, that's how I discovered the software had switched in the first place, when your (previously requisite) widescreen Greasemonkey thingamajig went haywire. Progress ruins everything.

What about using a squeezed image?

The parts I tinkered had nothing to do with the site logo, but somewhere in the phpBB theme files refresh process it got resized.
I might try to find and fix it next week.

Just edit the image set, reset the logo's dimensions and you're done. :)

It's not the image dimensions of the icon in the imageset. That was OK.
It's the compiled html on each page that's forcing the displayed size.
It seems when I refreshed the theme, it used default sizes, whereas when it was "converted" from the prior theme, that was taken into account.
So I increased the site_logo canvas size to match the phpBB default.
