Random not responding Desktop Search Rules

Post by sanferno »

Hi,
I've been noticing from time to time that after closing DSR window, the next time I wanted to search, though I try to open the program, no window show up but the process is still alive in Task Manager.
Am doing something wrong or is it a little bug?

if you close deskrule with the X titlebar button, it stays in memory. However it should start afresh even if the old thread is somehow tangled in a problem!?
see if you can get a reproducible path or if you can get me the hung process log as explained here (if it is hung)

I better not regret mentioning this, but this is not true for the .42 x64 unregistered release. The process quits properly, as it should continue to do so.

Well, it think here's one reproducible error.

1. Search by name (in advanded rules, not toolbar). In this case I'm searching for PDFs containing "CLI" in their names.
2. Found some PDF, preview, and finally open by double click.
3. Close PDF reader and DR as most people do (upper right corner red cross).
4. Trying to open again DR, nothing show up. Just for a brief time cursor change to "cursor-clock" state (but just one second or less).

I must end DR process in Task Manager in order to be able to use it again.

There's no sudden crash. The window simply doesn't pop up remaining in the hyperspace

there are two kinds of people, those with unlock keys, and those without. Deskrule stays in memory for the former

That's supposed to be an incentive? Απαπα!

That said, I can't reproduce the OP's difficulty in (now registered) .42 x64. If this happens with previewing PDF's, then that extension/iFilter is the part to be investigated. The PDF-XChange handler is working as expected.

sanferno I got your dump file and I will look into it but tell me what happens if you quit deskrule fully first pressing ALT+X? does it go away or it still stays in the task manager list?

I can see your deskrule is stuck waiting for tracker previewer to quit (C:\Program Files\Tracker Software\Shell Extensions\XCShInfo.dll) but I don't understand why a new window won't open. This could be a combination with the listary plugin you have. Try to disable listary from deskrule (if possible) and see if that changes anything

Here's a couple of thing I've noticed with your advices, note I use by default "Sumatra PDF reader":

1. Closing Listary.
1.1 Open a PDF on the results panel with Sumatra (or Adobe Reader), close DR window, and then close PDF. I can open again DR window.
1.2 If I open PDF, close Sumatra and then close DR, the window doesn't show up.

2. Not closing Listary.
Open a PDF on the results panel with Sumatra, close DR window, and then close PDF. I can't open again DR window and it doesn't matter the way I close both windows.

The only way it "works" as it should be is the 1.1

do you have the previewer inside deskrule open or not? My guess is that you have it open, and in there it is PDF xchange viewer that provides the preview. What if you close the quick previewer?

Excuse me, preview pane was on. I am afraid I can't find a way to close it since the cross is disabled, is that ok?

Simply unticking the preview all works perfect, even with Listary in the background. So, is this a problem of mine or a general wrong behaviour?

the problem is that you have a ton of PDF programs installed simultaneously :)
I am working on a fix that should mask this problem, I'll let you know when it is available

Yes, I know... each of them do their job well, but none is suitable for all-in-one.
Hope my mess can help you with developing DR.

Seems that the problem remains.

1. Listary closed.
If I turn off preview pane, all goes well.

2. With Listary.
No window show up after first attempt. It doesn't matter that preview is on.

Tricky thing for starting the week :x
