crashes on Windows 10 Home 21H2 19044.1889

Post by jimspoon »

xplorer2 ult 5.2.0.0 ULT x64 03/29/22 has been crashing quite a bit lately on my laptop running Windows 10 Home 21H2 19044.1889. Recently I cloned my 256GB m.2 nvme ssd to a 1TB m.2 nvme ssd, which is now my laptop ssd - might have something to do with that.

p.s. I get a small dialog with "SQLite Error" when I try to rename a folder in xplorer2. Could it be something besides xplorer2 causing the problem?

please get the latest version 5201 from the website and send me its crash information (using HELP > CRASH INFORMATION menu command)
as for the SQL message, it definitely isn't coming from xplorer2. Are you using some special folders or some special shell extension that works on all folders somehow?

Thank you for tracing the problem to the native preview handler. I think I had run the PDF Xchange shell extension setup program XCShInfoSetup.exe to set the shell extension, as advised here: https://www.tracker-software.com/knowle ... extensions -

I just ran it again and see this window:

The page above advises to set all the handlers to "None" and then reset to the desired handlers. I can try that again to see if my crash problem goes away. I also have "Microsoft PDF Previewer" registered on my laptop, I could also try that one.

After I used the XCShInfoSetup.exe tool to re-register the PDF Xchange Preview Handler, clicking a PDF file in xplorer2 immediately caused a crash. I ran the tool again and unregistered all the PDF Xchange shell extension handlers. Then I ran the Preview Handler Association Editor. Somehow the Microsoft handler was already set as the Preview Handler for the .pdf extension, so I didn't have to set that manually. We'll see if this fixes the crash problem.

if pdf exchange crashes with xplorer2, that's bad news... I will try it out myself
in any case you can use the shell extensions from sumatra PDF that are lightweight and definitely don't crash:

If I associate PDF files with PDF24 Creator in Windows 10 64-bits, the xplorer² Draft Preview (Ctrl+Q) is blurry. The Native Preview makes xplorer² hang indefinitely, it has to be terminated through Windows Task Manager.
This is not happening in Windows own native File Explorer.

I am not aware of this pdf24 tool, but as it looks quite popular I will look into it
btw I installed the latest pdf xchange editor 9.4 and I didn't find any problems with PDF native preview

robert2 can you also try running xplorer2 WITHOUT the advanced option "native preview uses background thread" (tick it off). Any luck?

i installed pdf24 but it didn't add any shell extensions for preview. Are you sure this is the tool handling PDF previews in xplorer2?
try this tool to check what is registered for pdfs

so it is sumatra fault!? I never had any problem with it
try a reboot, then see if ALL pdfs crash or just some of them. If only some, please send me a small sample via email
thanks
