windows 95

Post by nikos »

Any windows 95 users left out there?
I'm thinking of dropping w95 support for xplorer2
(programming rebars is way too hard pre-win98)

this may affect old NT4 users too
but all problems evaporate when you install internet explorer 3 or later
(unfortunately m$ don't allow me to redistribute dlls included with IE)

are there any people affected?

old NT4 users
What happens if the user is young? ;)

Is there a new version in NT4 also? Or does it depend ONLY upon the version of IE?

it depends whether you have the active desktop upgrade
shell32.dll and especially comctl32.dll should be version 4.70 or better
otherwise, no toolbars!

To me, it seems reasonable to drop w95 from support.
Windows 95 supports neither large disk partitions nor NTFS -- so it does not seem likely that folks interested in better file management would still be using that OS.
But, even if there are some, there is 2xExplorer to fall back upon (without thumbnails, ref: 2X's FAQ#16).
And of course, it would be appropriate (on initial startup) to check the version of critical DLLs and issue the advisory that updates are required to run xplorer². [just my 2¢ ... having abandoned w95 years ago]

in the end of the day, x2 will run on really old 95 (without IE) but there won't be any toolbars

It would also be possible to state that x² requires version n or higher of commctrl.dll, etc, and provide links to download the required fies...

i tried to find such links from MSDN but to no avail
m$ recommends people to install IE instead
some users will detest such tactics, especially when x2 for them is a ticket out of (IE)explorers in the first place!

Yes, that would suck... :yuck:

Perhaps you could host the files yourself - I have seen that done before...

When m$$ drops support for what they consider an obsolete product, they do it completely!

Greetings,

Due to an application that I am required to use I still use Win95 on many machines. I also use a proggy called netsupport for remote control that requires a more recent version of that dll. Those dl's are out there and there are a few sites that just host them for free. I'll try to link if i can remember where.

The interesting thing is...

that there are still win95 users and nikos though that longhorn means the end of x2!
