On occasion I switch to a folder I don't always use, and the icons next to files are either the document or folder variety, and I have to wait till they change to their rightful emblems before I can open any of them.
On what can I blame this?

File icons slow to load

icons are extracted last, so if you can't see icons xplorer2 is busy doing something else, e.g. some column or some preview. That needn't stop you though, the folder is ready to use as soon as you lose the hourglass pointer and you see items listed. You don't have to wait for icons to show, just start double-clicking
