To identify UTF-8 encoded files by its BOM signature: do a Find files containing $EF$BB$BF using RAW encoding.
Note: the SQL Server 2008 OSQL utility does not handle UTF-8 encoded files, thus the need to easily identify these files.

I often use mirror scrolling when comparing the contents of 2 folders, after using F9 or ctrl-F9 to select files that have changed. I turn on the Sticky option and keep both panes in the detail view. I use the up/down arrows or ctrl-up/down to navigate to a highlighted file and, thanks to mirrored s...

I am with BRX and Cosmo in wanting some way to consistently move to the parent folder with the current child folder selected. I am often confused when navigating to the parent folder in X2 as I expect that the folder I just came from would be highlighted, but it often is not. I'm glad for the discus...

FTP shortcut in X2
Is it possible to create a shortcut or a user command so I can open an FTP site in an X2 pane? (When I type an ftp address in the address bar, X2 opens the site in the active pane. But, when I double click a shortcut in X2, the FTP site opens in a new IE window. I haven't been able to get a user com...

Compare subfolders causes warning
Win2K SP4, x2 1.5.0.0. Compare subfolders command. Scrap pane opens and beeps twice. The status line displays "Can't group on this column" with the yellow exclamation mark for a few seconds. I didn't notice this happening in 1.4.0.1.

Show in Groups grayed out?
Using x2 1.5.0.0 on Win2K SP4. View, Arrange By, Show in Groups is always grayed out. I've tried sorting by extension, size, and modified date with different view settings. Any ideas?

Careful using Browse flat
I really like the scrap container feature, though I'm still learning the nuances of how to use them. My misunderstanding of the following almost caused some big problems - so I'm sharing this for other's benefit. I was in a folder that contained several sub folders and files. I highlighted all of th...

Things I miss when I have to use a PC without X2: 1. Viewing contents of files as text or hex using F3 (why I found 2x a while back). 2. 2 pane copy 3. Robust copy and how it handles errors. 4. Alt-F3 copy path 5. Keyboard friendly navigation Some things I can't do any other way except X2 (at least ...
