what you describe is the designed behaviour of xplorer2 and I don't know how else to describe it to you. you've touched upon everyone+dog there but coming to the original subject of view modes, if you read again that article more closely you'll see how things work here: * don't use Actions > Folder settings > Save except for the rare folders you want to view differently * for all other folders xplorer...

I went into a pane and set it for "Detail", only to find that when I customized it, the manual than says that it is only good for that one folder. I don't want the file date, nor the attributes showing and it seems to me rather tedious, to have to go through all of the folders individually...
