is creating a vhd virtual hard disk enough or must i install a full OS?

(right now i'm installing winxp 32bit but thought i'd ask as it occurred it may be an option).  

if not, what is a vhd used for?  you could just create some hd space and use that, no?

In Streams Explorer there's some info in the bottom pane. Does x2 show all the same info? I think I tested and x2 shows:

1 single
2 lines of
3 information

Does/Can x2 show the full details like stream explorer?
