You really start appreciating X2's pricing model if you look at some others out there. DOpus comes to mind. $80 for a single machine install. And no, their upgrades are not free either.

I don't suppose rar support is in the works? I know that explorer only supports zip, but hardly anyone uses that anymore. All the archives out there are rar.

It does not. I tried it with Office 2003 docs, 2007, and 2010. Preview works fine in explorer and another third party file manager I tried.

I have a similar problem. In my case all the settings disappear. I prefer to keep xplorer always running.
