Kilmatead, whether or not the IBM-PC was expensive is dependent on ones circumstance. As a kid of 15, that might be an accurate statement. But being a bit senior to you (in age at least), I was involved in business settings where the PC was the THE micro-computer of choice. There was an old sayin...

as I remember it, the PDP-11 was limited by being 16 bit It was not a limitation for the applications that I was developing. 32 bits made the VAX way more expensive. The company I was working for had too much legacy code to consider switching - besides we were using the LSI-11 embedded in our own ...

The VAX was bigger and faster - not better from a programming perspective. I was not really wondering about all those things, but I did enjoy reading about them. Since my degree is in engineering (electrical), and I was educated in the US, quite a few years ago, I was not required to take many hour...

I used to work for one of the first companies that sold those 20 MB hard drives (in the US). The company was named Prizm Computer Products. I later worked for another company, Great Lakes Computer Peripherals that also sold 20 MB hard disks - though I think we eventually got to 40MB or more. I als...

Kilmatead, As usual, and interesting, entertaining, educational commentary on a technical issue. And while I enjoyed reading your post, when I was done, I was not really sure what Nikos (Lucan) had done. I understand it is related to the I attribute but I am not clear what the issue is and why it ...

As per usual, I agree with Kilmatead. There should be an icon in that spot on the status bar (AND others - like the filter) whether or not there is an active state. Show the funnel or show the funnel with the red circle with a line to indicate no filter. For those of us that do not use a feature ...

Kilmatead, I believe I understand the issue as you describe it. On its face it seems completely inconsistent - and illogical. However, a programmer must be logical, so why would Nikos, a programmer, create such inconsistent functionality? Is it that he cannot easily find a way, programmatically, ...

This is kind of a mess. IMHO there is too much going on automatically. That may be fine for the very experienced user or the user that does a particular filter operation frequently. However for someone who might have need of this feature a few times a year, a virtual minefield awaits them. A fold...

I wish I knew about your reputation and inclination for the off-topic digression before I started this dialog. I would not have been so restrained. I should have known you were a philosophy major - that would have also changed my responses. You sound more like a literature major - but philosophy ...

Kilmatead, Well, alrighty then. First, I am not a Republican. Never was. I am currently what is classified as an Independent - more middle ground - not aligned with either major party. I understand that conservative views are often associated with more mature citizens, and I have become more cons...
