what you want is not possible but you can separate single-click activation from "hover" (track) selection

after quitting 2x edit its registry key and subtract the value 8 from General Settings\lvsExtendedStyle which corresponds to turning LVS_EX_TRACKSELECT off

this depends on the active folder you start browsing from

if it is "c:\your docs" then yes it won't open up sub-branches
but as you browse in that part of the namespace, branches will be automatically opened and kept in sync

i can't reproduce what you observed about tree's autosync; when I set the registry value to 19 ( decimal ) it goes as advertised. most probably you are puzzled about zipfolders
they are folders in XP and as such sorted up there with the rest of the folders

what about a quadruple click?
i'll have to check the docs for WM_MOUSEACTIVATE for any improvements...
