OT: remote assistance/desktop access

Post by nikos »

I wonder if anyone has ever used any remote desktop program, ie one that allows a troubleshooter to access another PC remotely through internet and take control of the mouse & keyboard so as to figure out problems said user may be having?

preferably free?

i know webex have such a system but it ain't free

thanks

I think Windows XP/Vista come with a built-in "remote desktop" client.

yes, but i've read XP's "remote assistance" has problems with firewalls and the like, so i'm trying to discover any alternatives  :?

Our IT guys here use MS NetMeeting to take control of our PC's in times of trouble. Works well.

I don't know though if that is bundled with Windoze or a bought program

I have used windows Remote Desktop, and it works well, there is also Windows Remote Assistance, which I think is what you're looking for.

Logmein works well as remote desktop, I use that currently, less hassle to setup than windows RD.

I always use Crossloop to help my old father with all kinds of computer troubles. I definitely can recommend this one. It's very small, it does what it has to do (it has a few easy extra's), and it is so easy to use that really every dummy can start with it straightaway, even my father
It's free too.

You should look into the world of VNC - Virtual Network Computing.

more than a couple of clients out there, some are free / OSS and some proprietary.

Last I checked Symantec PC Anywhere Host only was a free option as well, but that may be only when obtaining it as a bundle with a new PC or elsewhere.

Other alternatives include GoToMyPC (not free) and such commercial ventures.  XP / Vista Remote Desktop have gotten a bit better with XP SP2 and Vista, but you can sometimes expect some problems.

We use on premise RHUB remote support appliance. It is not free, but worth paying it. It simply works flawlessly.
