cyrillics support or what version to use

Post by vgv8 »

I downloaded (from google search) and started to use
2X Explorer (Product Build: 1.4.1.12)

Unfortunately I immediately encountered a problem.

Filenames in cyrillics, that I see without any problems in Windows Explorer, appear as ?????? ??? ???.???

For ex., if to SaveAs from
http://www.kp.ru/daily/23217/26688/
the filename are saved-as in cyrillics name-topic.
Quite comfortable in Windows Explorer but distorted in 2X

Any hints how to correct this?

vgv8,

Never be sorry for asking a question!

& as JRz reminds us with every post - the only dumb questions are the ones which are not asked.

Good luck restoring your file system, btw, it sounds like it's messed up a bit. :(

entered in choosing instead of using

I just downloaded [1]
and the problem is still here.

Well, Help entries (half of them) in [1] do not work for me.
There is no (warning about) explicit installation (at least, I start xplorer2 in situ) or necessity to restart PC, though many of the functionalities started really working only after restart (to me).
I had no patience to follow readme.txt (Start DBMon using the "runThis_dbmon") because it started perusing for hours my hard disks in somewhat meaningless and quite unexpected even to me places (the directories I just intended to delete) and there is no explanation whatsoever about it and other things?! "Alt+F2" doesn't work (at least, from left pane), moving big directories never comes out from "Preparing to move" and virtually freezes Windows, etc

I was quite happy with [4] (except cyrillics), and noticed Windows registry entries for it w/o any installation. So, my experience with "installation" of [1] forces me to ask
?what is [5] (2xexplorer with installation) is going to add to my existing happiness and to Windows configuration?

I still did not stop in choosing between X2Explorer, xplorer2 and its modifications. And it seems I already am confused with new brand name Editor2
I couldn't visualize Help (Information entry) in [3], it appears as one lamped/unstructured text. Does [2] include [3], since the download sizes are comparable?

Where eventually does unicode support for "?explorer?"'s lie?

what you need is the unicode build of x2, which at present isn't available for downloading; i could send you a copy to try if you send me an email

still i haven't heard any complaints in the past about 2x showing filenames incorrectly. Which windows are you using? Do the filenames have any OEM characters?

I have a strange feeling of being silly but yr profile doesn't contain Email and just now I haven't time to dig further.

It is not that kind of problem to drop out of stream. I didn't know it is a problem at all.

I do not usually use names in cyrillics and try to convert them to latin. The reason is that files with names in cyrillics are being opened for minutes (some quirk of Windows). I use Windows XP, English. Might be in Russian it is better but I reside in Portugal and I never use any SW in languages other than English (though I encounter portuguese Windows frequently with clients, it is the pain in the ass)

What are the OEM characters? I've heard about various encodings but not this one. Well, if you install/add Russian in Control Panel - Regional and Language Settings - Languages - Details - Add then usually you will have in Internet Explorer in menu View - Encodings (-More...) options Cyrillics (Windows), Cyrillic(KOI-8R), Cyrillic(KOI-8U), Cyrillic (DOS), Cyrillic (ISO). I am not great specialist but, for ex., KOI's are alternative ASCIIs (8bits). I even can try to find maps for you (to study cyrillic letters), some of the special or reserved symbols in ASCII table are substituted for russian letters. So, these encodings permit to use both latin and cyrillics inside 8bit maps

In HTML Cyrillic (Windows) corresponds to to "windows-1251"
<META http-equiv=Content-Type content="text/html; charset=windows-1251">

Just very quick search in google for KOI8-R gave

PS. I do not mind sending (wnated) Emails to anybody
