Clicking file fails to switch to associated program

Normally when I click on a file, it opens in the program with which it is associated and I am automatically switched to that program. Several weeks ago, the automatic switching stopped. The file still opens in the associated program, but I remain in 2X until I manually switch to the program in which the clicked file was opened. Did I accidentally change a setting in 2X or XP that caused this change? How can I regain automatic switching when clicking?

you mean the window of the program is not on top. - ?
its probably a system thing...
I've not used Xp , so I don't know if there is a setting or something like that..

i have seen this happening with m$ office
e.g. the first time you open a xls file then all's fine but if excel is already open it won't pop upfront. It is indeed a system thing
