I was using 2x to copy some graphics from the floppy to my hard disk. Some of them were duplicates, some had the same name but different content, so I switched between panels with the preview on. It ocurred then to me that a two preview panels, each showing the focused item on each panel, could be an useful thing.

Why don't you use Alt-F9 to see which files are different?
Two preview-panes would be a bit confusing to me...

quick'n'dirty dual preview: open 2 instances of 2x !
you may have seen in other posts that x2 already sports a thumbnail view, so things should be even easier there

Thanks for the replies. I don't think a double preview panel would be too confusing.  Alt F9 could have worked, unless something (comments, etc) was different inside the picture files, with the picture itself been the same.
Thumbnail mode? I have to look into that...

Thanks a lot for the answers.
