Is that about getting the explorer dialog about changing file extension for EACH file renamed?

mass renames, specially of folders, seem to be talking a lot more time with this latest version. Even with less than 10 folders to rename I am getting a progress bar and it takes several seconds.

Is anyone else seeing this?

I see slow mass renames on as few as three folders. The renames I've been doing today are simple non-RE search-n-replace so they should be very fast. They are in folders with 50 or more folders that I have filtered to the ones that need renaming.

I use color coding based on modification date on files and folders. I think color tagging is something else though which I am not using.

I'm going to try with the previous x2 (5.1.0.0) to see if it is something new.

Edit:
I get the same slow mass renames with 5.1.0.0 but not with 5.0.0.3

mass renaming files seems normal... no progress bar
mass renaming folders, even two or three empty folders in their own folder is slow
increasing the number of folders to rename makes it take longer

v5.1 uses a different API for renaming, so this explains the difference. But I don't see any significant slowdown.
Can you tell me how slow is it for you? (compared to v5.0, averaged per file renamed)

ps. scrap it, I see the delay myself too

I don't notice a delay on renaming files. It's renaming folders that is slow.

I tried to rename 100 files and it took 15 seconds, that's slow!
but you're right for folders it's even slower, half a second for each rename

can you try this "beta" and see how it goes? If you don't need consecutive renames you can set registry setting nMaxSlowRename to 0 to have things done as in v5.0

renaming is just as slow with that beta... I'll try the reg settting...

I see nMaxSlowRename is a per layout setting. I'll leave it enabled in one of my layouts in case I need to do a sequential rename.

Setting nMaxSlowRename to 0 does speed up renaming.

Thanks.

the idea is that if you have only a few files to rename, you can put up with the delay and take advantage of the possibility of successive renames. Or you can have a special layout for successive renames.
