forum relocation

Post by nikos »

this forum is hosted on a different server for ages and it's time it was moved home to zabkat.com. I don't know much about it other than it's running on an older version of phpBB. I need somebody who is familiar with this sort of thing to help me with the transition.

* install a newer version of phpBB
* carry the existing message database unaltered

I think tuxman once volunteered for the ill fated wiki, do you know anything about forums? Or anybody else?

thanks

I performed an update from (Woltlab Burning Board to) phpBB2 to phpBB3 once. It pretty much worked.  :)
(Actually, it's just two or three clicks.)

OK, the new forum UI looks good. More modern, possibly more capability. Still appears to be hosted in the same place...

A change for the positive, I'd say.

[edit] uh, except for one "feeture" I just stumbled upon ... Using the "Return to xxx forum" link at the bottom of the topic returns you back to page 1 of the forum, not the page you were on when you entered the topic. Kind of a surprise when you're down to page 8, then suddenly back to page 1.... Just sayin' ...

Is it possible to move the avatars on the left side?

Yes, would require a theme edit or a user script.

Re: forum changes -
One step at a time.
The main issue with the old forum was that the phpBB software version being used was many years out of date, which has now been addressed.
Changing the host would not affect function, so we will stay where we are for a while to maintain access to tech assistance of the site owner.

@ "Return to xxx forum" link -
IIRC, the prior board behaved the same.
(I use the "Back" button on my browser to avoid that behavior.)

@ move the avatars on the left side -
That's not a standard setup option choice that I am aware of.
If enough folks are bothered by the avatars on the right, I will look into what it takes to move them to the left.

Indeed.

We'll also note that thread email-notifications seem to be sent from a null ("<>") source-address. Weird.

Only back to 1979 to get a Treat Williams fix when Manchester England, England, was across the Atlantic Sea...

It sounds better when you sing it. Anyway, they are ruled by Germans after all, so it's just another stain on your feathered cap. Plus, they gave us Snooker, which makes the world a better place for men of intellectual sporting inclines who couldn't exactly get away with calling Chess a real sport.

Chess is more interesting than Snooker. It requires brain.
