alpha version 250.13

Post by nikos »

www.zabkat.com/test/kenny.7z

here comes the ribbon
Image

obviously there's still some work left to be done but it is time to keep an open mind and chip in with your ideas. What do you want to see on the ribbon out of the available commands? You can't put in everything; this should be like a "plain version" with the most important commands

see here how the ribbon works with windows explorer. We can't put some of these commands but just chip in with your recommendations

thanks!

PS. you can also find included the improved renamer

I detest ribbon bars as they take up to much real estate. I'm not a power user of X2 hence I use very few of its options so I don't need rows of ribbons to display my prowess.

I have customised Word and Excel to display the few menus that I frequently use in the tiny top left Quick Access Bar so that I don't have to open and close the ribbon for common tasks.

The largest screen I own is 15 inch and others which are less, real estate is precious.

oh cr@p I forgot! You must create a shortcut to this kenny.exe and pass the /A command line switch so that it stops with the assertions, sorry about that!

@dunno
actually ribbons were made for the less advanced user, and you can right click on the ribbon to minimize it and put just the commands you like in the quick access toolbar (on the window titlebar)

I think the ribbon looks great!
Everyone tends to forget that with 4K displays coming in to fashion you'll have so much room you won't know what to do with it all.

That's why the "less advanced user" uses the Windows Explorer with ribbons and not an "alternative" file manager. :baaa:
The ribbon bar totally lacks the beloved x^2 look and feel.

Everyone tends to forget the decreasing number of large screens in a work environment.

/A did the trick...

still cannot resize the mass rename dialog vertically
it would be nice if the mass rename dialog remembered the previous settings like size and renaming options

the ribbon is a ribbon... I think the menu is more efficient but some people like it so why not...
I played with the few buttons available and they all did what they are supposed to do...

what renaming options aren't remembered? they all are, including window size. Only the new "search" box doesn't have a history

you are right... I guess I had not actually done a rename with this version... I was just looking at the preview...

BTW, the new $[xx:yy] is not listed in the token help

Interesting:

I had kenny.exe on my desktop.
Now that it comes with .png files, I created a folder named x2 on my desktop and put everything there.
It still can't find the .png files and (shortly) flashes an error about that.

check which version you are running, see HELP > ABOUT dialog. Also you can use the special %X2DIR% path in the addressbar to see where x2 is really running from

Okay, the shortcut business sorted kenny out.

I've been putting the mass renamer through its paces, and it's working a treat! Thanks for adding the search & multi-replace mode, it makes the renamer a complete tool. I'll certainly be switching from my third-party renamer in favor of yours once we're out of alpha. I think you're right to be proud of this feature, you've done a nice job! A lot of functionality in a minimal, easy-to-use interface.

Like FrizzleFry, I can't resize the renamer vertically. Not sure that's a problem, but at least you know.

As for the ribbon... personally, I don't find the ribbon an efficient way to interact with a program, but opinions on this subject vary greatly. Thanks for the option to turn the ribbon off; to each their own. I think the usefulness of the ribbon, and hence, its success, depends very much on the commands in the ribbon. Microsoft has done a lot of research and development into which commands are the most used and needed. Perhaps they've published this data? Or could you just add the commands they've used for Explorer?
