Updating portable Xplorer2 Ultimate on non-admin PCs

Post by jpcoetzee »

I use Xplorer2 Ultimate portably. On some machines I don't have full admin rights so updating it is a pain.

Is it possible to download a Zip?

many thanks for your great product.

when using the ultimate version in portable mode, usually you keep it in a USB stick so you don't have to worry about installing it. For more information see a file called PORTABLE.TXT in the xplorer2 installation folder

True, but I keep a copy on a networked drive because USB ports aren't accessible and I can install anything (no admin rights). So to update that networked copy I have to:

1. install xplorer2 at home using Sandboxie to keep the installation out of the registry
2. copy the files from the Sandboxie vault over to my portable directory at home
3. zip up that portable directory
4. delete x2settings.ini from the zip
5. Upload the zip to Dropbox

then at work

6. Download the zip from Dropbox
7. Unzip and overwrite the xplorer2 directory on the networked drive.

I'm sure you can tell that I do love xplorer2 :inlove: but I'd love that installation to be easier.

you are making things too complicated. Sandboxie? why? All you need are the installation files.

Yes, but how do you get the installation files without actually running the installer? That's what he's asking.

The answer is to drag-&-drop the installer into an (also portable) Universal Extractor.

There are three things that people don't like in this world: Brussels sprouts, homeless people who try to wash your windows at traffic lights, and running installers. And maybe (just maybe) nuclear fallout could be seen as a loose fourth. It's just the way it is.

Nikos, know that you say 7zip...

Would it be to much to ask to open directly on x2 compressed files such as 7z, rar, etc. as we can with regular zip?

Does it actually work? Because it seems like there's no installer, it's "only" a VS proyect, isn't it?
