Thanks for the summary for those of us who are destined to have our files forever trapped across networks.
I have the "fast network access" option checked. I'll experiment with other settings to see what optimizes performance in my situation.
One other item I've just discovered is a 32 bit OS running in 4 GB RAM and forced to run MEGA(bloat)soft office products has is NO memory left for caching, so the hard drive works like a fiend moving segments in and out. I believe that runs at least 3 orders of magnitude slower than direct memory access.
A solution is a 64 bit OS with, say, 32GB of RAM. Many, many network problems solved!
