Just an addendum. Many ebooks (fortunately) are in PDF format. Is there anything similar for this type of files? I know that Zotero is quite good in picking up from PDF metadata, but it has some other limitations, and it is still a dedicated software, that one would like - if possible - to avoid in managing files.

if you have a plugin installed that populates PDF author/title columns (PDF xchange viewer I think does), then you can use a similar technique for your PDFs

Does this edit the book's metadata or just the filename ?. Many ereaders parse the book's metadata for information hence it would be pointless/hacky to only change the filename.

Similarly with mp3's its pointless to change the filename only as the metadata has the information which is parsed by the software for all relevant information.

this will only change the filename, which is important if you only use a file manager to browse your books
