How to display help in default browser?

Post by Robert2 »

When I press F1, or click a question mark help button, the help page is opening in Internet Explorer 11, which I never use. How can I make the help pages open in Firefox Quantum 64-bit, which is default on my system?
TIA

you can use the external browser setting szAltBrowser (see registry.txt information)
but xplorer2 can best work with IE, e.g. if you already have the help file open, and invoke F1 again, the same window will be used

I got these messages:
Firefox can’t find the file at /C:/Program Files/xplorer2_ult/x2help.htm#toc
Firefox can’t find the file at /C:/Program Files/xplorer2_ult/x2help.htm#gusto

Greetings Nikos,

I use the ultimate portable version and I entered the szaltbrowser in x2settings.ini and I did not find it in any of the options dialog. It still used IE. Any suggestions?

I entered szAltBrowser as a new String value directly in the Windows registry (HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\ZabaraKatranemia Plc\xplorer2_UC.global). The browser got changed to Firefox but the help pages could not be found from xplorer².
“C:/Program Files/xplorer2_ult/x2help.htm” is present on my system.

this key should be put in the xplorer2_UC.global section
if firefox cannot open the file, then it means it cannot process the table of contents parameters like x2help.htm#gusto
if you press F1 on its own, does it open the help in firefox?

Here is from http://kb.mozillazine.org/Links_to_loca ... o_not_work
Links to local pages do not work
For security purposes, Mozilla applications block links to local files (and directories) from remote files. This includes linking to files on your hard drive, on mapped network drives, and accessible via Uniform Naming Convention (UNC) paths. This prevents a number of unpleasant possibilities, including:

Allowing sites to detect your operating system by checking default installation paths
Allowing sites to exploit system vulnerabilities (e.g., C:\con\con in Windows 95/98)
Allowing sites to detect browser preferences or read sensitive data

other option: browse the xplorer2 installation folder and launch the HTM file from there

I found a workaround of sorts.
I have created an xplorer² User Command with "C:\Program Files\xplorer2_ult\x2help.htm" as the command-line and “Ctrl+1” as shortcut. “Ctrl+1” now brings up the help from within xplorer² and it opens in Firefox. :D
