forum relocation

after 20 odd years freeloading on netez servers, xplorer2 forums now move to their home address. We are still working on some redirection issues but for most of the time you shouldn't notice any difference other than the URL in the addressbar

if you see any problems please let me know

nothing email-based works, sorry. Forum administration is not my cup of tea and I closed all holes that could be nuisance or security threats

If you need help: I've been administrating phpBBs since 2000. Other than that, a forum without e-mail notification is ... oh well.

I see the ACP has an email section where I can configure it, but first it requires the SMTP credentials and password in plain text (!) and then I remember Sal often complaining that there's lots of email sent to the administrator for all the bogus registrations.

btw if you can see anything fishy with the way I've set it up please send me an email, I don't want a back-door to my main website because of the forum :P

You'd probably not use root credentials then.

Enabling a Captcha should get rid of some of them, adding a "blacklist" mod which compares IP addresses to Spamhaus etc. lists should do most of the rest.

Is there a way to translate old bookmarks so they work with the new forum? I played around with the URL for a while but never could get it to work. BTW, usually just searching for the end of a bookmark URL or title refound what I wanted.

I also suggest you put a ZabKat favicon somewhere so my new bookmarks aren't just a generic bookmark icons. I still have dozens of little red Netez icons.

there was a way to have everything nicely redirected with htaccess files, but Sal didn't do it, so all bookmarks etc must be redone. The link from old to new forum is the last part of the url e.g.

Code: Select all

viewtopic.php?p=xxx
you replace forum.zabkat.com with forum.zabkat.com/viewtopic…

I added a favicon but it may take some time to be recognised

Why don't you do it?

I see that all private messages are gone.

Are you planning to recover those? I'd hate to loose some of the correspondence there with someone whom I may never have the opportunity to write to again.

Also, is it really that hard to GREP all the topics to change "forum.zabkat.com" to "forum.zabkat.com"?

lately, with the way the forum goes, more interest in kilmatead than xplorer2, the real question is why do I keep it at all?
