Xplorer2 slowed down by pdf software / global freeze

Are pdf programs known to slow down Xplorer2? It started taking up to 10 to 20 seconds, sometimes a whole minute to open folders, even those with maybe 20 small files and I'm pretty sure it started after installing Foxit Reader or PDF-Xchange Viewer. Scrolling in x2 with arrow or page keys (Details view) would cause a freeze and give you that effect where the whole pane was filled with one filename repeated 50 times or whatever. Half the time you'd get Not Responding, x2 would grey out and sometimes freeze the entire computer. I uninstalled the pdf programs and x2 seems back to normal but now I don't know what to do because I have to have a pdf reader. PS I tried at least half a dozen readers, the only ones that don't mess up x2 are missing features I need.

are you showing any PDF related file details? See here for some ways xplorer2 slows down "naturally" as you ask more from it
