when you don't see icons showing, it either means you have plain icon mode activated, or xplorer2 is busy doing something else for you, and the icons are the last priority (you don't need to wait for them to show)

so which one applies for you? And what is this crash? Please use HELP > CRASH INFORMATION menu to send me the info file
