How to use szExclusionFilter?

Post by aml »

In https://www.zabkat.com/changes.txt you state,

* [P] A registry setting (szExclusionFilter) defines a global exclusion filter for views and tree, hiding matching files and folders. It is a layout-specific setting, defined as a comma separated list of wildcards to EXCLUDE from view (alternatively it can be a saved hyperfilter name as those in FIND FILES dialog). When active, the hidden files statusbar icon will show as a reminder. Only relatively fast file properties can be used in the exclusion filter.

In https://www.zabkat.com/blog/xplorer2-v4 ... filter.htm you state,

A new registry tweak called szExclusionFilter sets a global exclusion filter, extending the hidden file attribute to other files and folders.

There is also a video, but which does not treat this matter.

I know how to alter the Windows registry, but where and how would I use that szExclusionFilter key there, could you please give the parent key of the key szExclusionFilter, and the value of the key, let's say I want to exclude/hide

a) just the file extension .abc
b) two such extensions, .abc and .def

(I know I can also, manually, put -.abc into the Filter field, every time I run the program, but doing it by default would be so much better indeed.)

Thank you!

you don't need to edit the registry, just use TOOLS > ADVANCED SETTINGS menu command and enter your comma separated list of wildcards as such

for more complicated filters, define a "search rule" e.g. with CTRL+F dialog, save it with a name, then supply this name in the above highlighted box

This works fine and both with .abc and *.abc, as in your screenshot. It's very useful to hide backup files which some programs write into the same folder for example.

Thank you very much!

just keep in mind that this filter cannot be disabled, unless you use another layout that doesn't have a background filter
