Crtl+F4 closes tab -- no longer opens Editor²

Post by fgagnon »

latest beta surprised me with "close tab" action in response to Ctrl+F4 keycombo that I used to use to open a file for editing with Editor² :(
Was this intended?

yes
i sort of gathered that people that have external editors won't need to see ed2... and we are running short for tab shortcuts!

Although it surprised me, I figured as much from discussion elsewhere, & after I got over the scare of seeming to lose the whole directory & found it was just the tab that got closed.
But as hotkeycombos are a hot topic, it would be good for you to list any reassignments with each issue in changes.txt.
I wouldn't want to be surprised by some favorite keycombo turning into robust move or delete without warning.

i regret any inconvenience caused :)
for getting through to ed2, you can launch with F3 and then remove the readonly thingy with F6

Harping on my favorite:

I hope you implement the complete family of key combination for tabs:

* Launch new tab
* Close a tab

* Switch between the tabs rapidly
* Browse history of each tab without moving fingers to another set of keys

when you have tabs why do you need history of each?
just keep all folders open each in its own tab!

Ok so now the following picture emerges:

1. The user would normally use tabs only in one pane (It is recommended that the other pane be used plain (without tabs).

>> He can use tabs in both panes, but then only the drag-n-drop method would work to its full potential: the F5/F6 is limited a bit, because tabs from the other panes are not picked up by the F5/F6 dialogs).

2. The importance of history chain is diminished when you use tabs, because you can see all the required folders directly in tabs.

(A separate history list is maintained for each of the tabs, though).

****
That gives me an idea: Is it possible to convert the history chain to tabs with a menu option? Suppose the user realizes after browsing a bit that he wants to use the locations in history chain as tabs, this single command will give him that...

this isn't a bad idea but you can always DYI this if you open each folder in its own tab as you create the history

(otherwise i anticipate requests like can we recreate the history but exclude a few folders when creating tabs... ;)

Bad Idea: Ctrl+Insert is an equivalent for Ctrl+C in Windows!!

And it is working like Ctrl+C in win explorer but not in xplorer2. I agree that is a bad idea - should do copy/paste stuff.

i know some apps use Insert for copy/paste but x2 doesn't
anyway, there is no other key since ctrl+\ isn't a valid shortcut

This may be of help, I found it in another programs help file explaining how to use non-US keyboards.

Code: Select all

                              Swedish/
   US German French Finnish

 Ctrl-\ Strg-# Ctrl-* Ctrl-<
 Ctrl-; Strg-ü Ctrl-$ Ctrl-¨

 Alt-\ Alt-ü Alt-* Alt-§
 Alt-; Alt-$

 Ctrl-[ Strg-ß Ctrl-) Ctrl-´

 Ctrl-] Strg-' Ctrl-^ Ctrl-å

 Alt-[ Strg-Alt-ß Alt-) Ctrl-Alt-´

 Alt-] Strg-Alt-' Alt-^ Alt-å
I agree with JRz that Ctrl+Ins is not a good combination since it is an almost universal copy key.

So what do you say, Nikos, we could put this table in the docs and then let this arrangement go on?

we don't even know whether this table is complete, e.g. have we asked any chineze user?

ctrl+insert is here to stay (it's there on .94)
