robust copy and Alternate Data Streams

Post by pmike »

x2's robust copy is neat, but anything stored in an Alternate Data Stream (ADS) on NTFS gets lost when copying. :crying:

no way!
i've checked that
are you sure you're copying from NTFS to NTFS?

even when maintaining afs isn't possible, x2 will tell you about it
which windows are you on?

Yes. It looses ADS info (like comments) when copying files even on the same NTFS partition.

I first noticed this problem when backing up my shared network drive (NTFS) to my local NTFS-formatted drive.

If I use regular explorer's copy facility, it just works.

P.S.
I'm using Win XP SP1

P.P.S.
Moving (as opposed to copying) on the _same_ drive seems to be ok. Coppying still doesn't work.

P.P.P.S.
MS Office documents retain some of their info because the comment field is stored internally with these. Other data streams attached, however, will fail.

what if you do drag-drop within x2?
does that work or does it lose comments too?

this is totally serious
please get this debug version and tell me what it says when you start copying a file with comments

also search the debug output for a line starting with "CopyFileEx"; what does the rest say?

thanks

i accidentally deleted mine!

ta!
do you (or any other XP user) have the same problem?
just try copying a single file with comments

this happens for every release, all the serious bugs appear 1 day after i publish the update

Are you wanting the readme_beta.txt file from the 1.0.0.92 / 1.0.0.93 betas? I've got that and almost all of the other earlier betas.

Nikos, see your folder on comcast

P.S. I see Fred has put a complete debmon package in the reference folder, so that would do it too (missed your post Fred)

Works like a charm on Win XP Pro SP2. Don't loose any comments (only checked for this, don't know of any other serious use of afs :? ), whether copying or moving (both robust)

Maybe some problem on pmikes system??

I have x2 on my home PC (Win2k SP3) in addition to my work PC (XP SP1) (I really appreciate the way nikos made the license).

I came home and tried the same thing and robust copy works great on my home computer! :D

It will be a day before I get back to work and can try x2 in debug mode. I'll let you know how it goes.

Tried it on my laptop. Copied a file with comment on the same harddisk. Windows XP Professional SP1 with lots of updates. No problem here.
