Here is the picture what I have in mind
Something like that. If there is nothing writen in box there is no filter but when you write something in, the fillter activates automatically. Is this possible?

If you write what you want between two asterisks on the address bar, press enter and voila - filtered.
It's not exactly what you have in mind (itunes?), but it works well.

yes, the addressbar as it is accepts paths, filters, or both!
