1504 alpha version

Post by nikos »

i have been adding a few new features and now you've got a chance to test drive them!

www.zabkat.com/dbmon.zip (900KB)

this is a debug version, unicode only, no help/installer etc, just a few readme files.

it gives a silly assertion error when you start and another one when you quit. You can ignore them both; any other strange messages or behaviour please let me know

thanks

First bug for you Nikos, may be an ignore situation since everything appeared to work after.

Dual pane (scrap container also open).
Switch to single pane (button or Ctrl+O) from the RIGHT pane.
Error:

Code: Select all

---------------------------
Microsoft Visual C++ Debug Library
---------------------------
Debug Assertion Failed!

Program: C:\Program Files\zabkat\1504 alpha\kenny.exe
File: D:\umeca74\My Documents\cpp\newkenny\MAINFRM.cpp
Line: 4016

Expression: ndir >= 2

For information on how your program can cause an assertion
failure, see the Visual C++ documentation on asserts.

(Press Retry to debug the application)
---------------------------
Abort   Retry   Ignore
---------------------------
Ignore produced the error again, Ignore again and all O.K.

Switching back to dual (using Ctrl+O) worked.

Swap panes  - same error, two ignores and O.K.

Works from the left pane without error, so it looks like the Swap is triggering it.

lock viewer

Post by profess »

hi nikos,

excellent alpha release!!!

however (small problem)

i used lock viewer from the view menu, selecting a text file.
closed the previewer
then opened it again.

no contents are shown in the previewer, even when selecting other files.  the option for lock viewer is still selected.

when the previewer is set to off then maybe it should deselect "lock viewer" from the view menu.

Regards and thanks,

Osei.

a very very small, minute, minor thing! :)

when you have set up colour coding, if the file type you have colour coded is at the top (first file shown), then only the file name and other columns are coloured.

full row colouring is not shown for the very first file (if it is meant to be colour coded).

i think this happens to first column of the first file, not just file name, as i dragged another column to be first and get the same white spacing (not full row colouring).

hope that makes sense.

[[[full row selection worked in all tabs, however, i switched over to another tab and it had not applied background colouring to file name, and the whole row was not coloured]]]

Regards and thanks,

Osei.

Nikos, could you please post a non-debug version to, so it could be usable in a real life. I'll run debug version if got some error.
I'm using Xplorer2 - the only file manager that does not suck. Actually, it rocks!

Yes, confirmed with JPG file. It would seem logical that the viewer lock is released if the viewer is closed. Either that or a more positive indication that the viewer is locked (colour of the viewer tab is changed perhaps?)

Two other minor bugs:

If the viewer is locked in Normal, switching to Draft results in a blank viewer pane. Should the viewer lock disable the Draft / Normal switching?

Dragging the splitter between the viewer and the file list has interesting effects with a locked viewer, but that might be a bit of a silly thing to do anyway!

Otherwise, everything looks very good.

Colour coding is cool! I had to activate it separately for the two panes. Is this how it's supposed to work?

Suggestion for future consideration

Now that colour coding is coming, and dirs and various types of files can be distinguished by colour, I would like to have a fourth option in Options, General, Item Icons: None

For rough differentiation, a character/symbol in front of each name could distinguish between dirs and files, and maybe between general types of files: executables, config files, archives, and the rest.

That is, something like Text View in Konqueror:

\ dir1
\ dir2
\ dir3

* file1
* file2
* file3
* ...

Looks good. And thanks for the example too.

A suggestion. I saw that the inactive pane get no colors. Is that by design? Is there a setting I must change?

[Later] Changed this one. I was testing color coding and made some conclusions that were false. I reported some problems that were not there. Just testing the wrong things. :oops:

color coding goes only for the active pane, and yes it's a setting for each pane individually so you can have one "normal" and one "confusing" :)

Yes, this looks very nice, indeed!

I've found what may be a problem: if one deletes a color coding filter while color coding is active, kenny will crash good and proper. (Deleting the filter while color coding is inactive seems OK.)

Here's the dbmon log I captured:

Not in Detail view but it certainly goes with a vengeance in List view! (Win XP SP2).

Thumbnail crashes also, but not so violently.

Strange effect with small Icons, changes the columns (with my display settings) from 4 to 2, so some filenames span two columns.

While trying to reproduce this, I found that color coding must be activated in both panes for the crash to occur.  Also works better with one of the icon view modes than with detail (see Gandolf's post above).

The following will consistently reproduce the error on my system (XP SP2):

     1. Set View (both panes) to Large Icons.

     2. In the right pane, create a filter and activate it.

     3. Go to the left pane and activate color coding.

     4. Go back to the right pane and delete the filter
         (without de-activating color coding).

     5. Move back to the left pane. Crash!

I couldn't reproduce your sequence with Large Icons but List crashed x², perhaps it is also related to the number of files filtered? I've e-mailed the Dbmon & Dr. Watson logs to you Nikos.
