Windows media player info

I am in an install mess. Install windows media player version 10 then 11 then rollback to 10.

Now I have windows media player 10 that can play wmv files with DRM only in the draft preview window but with no sound.
I can't play files with drm outside xplorer2.
If I try to right click (open with) menu on a wmv file which has DRM windows media player trys to play the file but gets an error ('windows media player is not installed properly. Reinstall the player')
Now, if I did that to a file without DRM it would play okay.

My question is, how does xplorer2 preview and play the wmv files?

Assumptions to bust - I have licences for DRM files (they play only in default preview pane)
I have tried and tried to reinstall windows media player 10 and 11.

xplorer2 uses whatever WMP you have installed. What if you completely uninstall wmp and then go back to v10?
