www.ps.ic.ac.uk/~umeca74/xplorer2_setup.exe (1.27 MB)

Today is the 3rd anniversary of the first public release v1.0, when xplorer2 first became $$oftware to be reckoned with. So happy birthday x2!

i may blog about this but for the time being i'm just grappling with some final vista nuances, later!

Installed v1.7.0.1 Ansi Pro over v1.6.5.3 on 98SE.
The delay in opening a folder (refreshing pane ect) is now 5 seconds.
Reverting to v1.6.5.3 :(

Fantastic program; would be lost without it. :D

Thanks, nikos!
This is good -- so far, anyway.
I'll take it for a full test ride tomorrow.

spiffy,
So far, my v1701 is as fast as 1653 ever was. I suspect you may have inadvertantly set up 1701 differently from 1653. Like sorting on a slow (non-stock) column.  If the 1701 features are added value for you, you may want to take a closer look at your setups :?

If you had multiple tabs loaded in your folder panes, a problematic tab may cause a problem in starting. In such case, a workaround is to start x2 in command line mode, with a command like this-

"C:\utilities\xplorer2.exe" D:\ D:\ /T

(The first part is the full path of x2 executable, enclosed in quotes.)

The /T option actually prevents x2 from loading the tabs from the last session, and the D:\ D:\ part ensures that you start with a known safe path for each folder pane.

Once x2 starts, you can again load the tabs.
Now you won't have problems in restarting.

You really did a great job with this version, Nikos! Just figured out how the cascading breadcrumb thing is working, and it looks so cool! The final 'What's new' list is impressive with all useful features. Thanks for the 1.7 version, and for listening to all those insane customers requests :hehe: .
Happy aniversary, X2!

If you had multiple tabs loaded in your folder panes, a problematic tab may cause a problem in starting.
I have a similar problem:
Whenever I start xplorer^2 with a path as a command line argument (i.e. most of the time, as it's set as my default file manager!) it crashes.

I'm running XP SP2, and installed over 1.6.xx. I don't use tab mucH (at all) so thats not the problem. In fact, if I don't specify a path as an argument (i.e. just run xplorer2_UC.exe, or xplorer2_UC.exe /p or whatever) it opens and runs fine.

Any ideas?

EDIT: Strangely, once xplorer is running, opening folders via it works fine, it's just the initial opening of it that isn't working.

Cannot run version.1.7.0.1

Post by Robert2 »

Hi,
I just tried to run version 1.7.0.1 on XP SP2. I installed over 1.6.5.3.
The new version won't run at all. I systematically got a Windows system Exception error message asking me to send a report to MS. Rebooting was no use.
I have had to revert to version 1.6.5.3 [Unicode].
I could not get Dr Watson to create a log for the incident. The host folder remained empty.
Is there a debug version for version 1.7.0.1?

Agreed: the problem is not caused by multiple tabs; it's just that the possibility of having one difficult-to-load folder increases when you have loaded multiple tabs.

Even one tab can be faulty and difficult to load. That's when the trouble starts. Mostly this happens with network folders (either some problem with the remote PC or PC not available temporarily). But I have seen that this happens with some local folders too.

Other users have also reported this.

Version 1.7.0.1 Bug report

Post by Robert2 »

Hi again!

I tried to uninstall version 1.6.5.3 [Unicode] before updating to 1.7.0.1. To no avail. I got the same MS report message.

But I think I found out what causes this problem.

If I run xplorer2 Pro as "xplorer2_UC.exe", everything works fine.

But if I run command-lines like this one

xplorer2_UC.exe "D:\My Bookmarks" "J:\Mail"

xplorer2 just won't run and creates an exception in Windows XP.

The snag is that I almost systematically launch xplorer2 with specific folder groups on the command-line...

Thanks for any help.

Robert,
The latest debug version should be as nikos posted in this topic.
probably still v 1.7.0.0

folks with startup problems,
please quote your full startup command line - it may provide a clue.

[edit/add] - didn't see your post, Robert2, while I was thinking about mine.
You may have a syntax error there; but I don't have time to decode for legal usage right now .. so, later, unless somebody else beats me to it.  ;)  [/edit]

My command-line for opening folders, as defined in the registry is:
"C:\Program Files\Misc\xplorer2\xplorer2_UC.exe" %1

Even running xplorer directly fails:
xplorer D:\

Running the debug build from http://forum.zabkat.com/viewtopic.php?t=5161 with the command line
xplorer D:\
nets this result:

igi and Robert2,

You are both right - there is a problem with 1.7.0.0/1
neither will start when given explicit starting folders.

yet the last beta [1.6.5.12] has no such issue.

Robert2,
My eyes were playing tricks on me as I rushed off to "life is calling"...
you had no syntax error: it should have worked.  :(

I expect nikos will track down the issue and fix it before long, as it is completely reproduceable.  :|
