Folders and pictures on camera not recognized anymore

Post by zwerfkat »

Since I upgraded to xplorer2 1.7.1.2, folders and pictures on my Canon camera connected to an usb port are not shown anymore. Although xplorer shows "Canon DIGITAL IXUS 55" on the left pane, and ";;{E211B736-43FD-11D1-9EFB-0000F8757FCD}\devid:{6BDD1FC6-810F-11D0-BEC7-08002BE2092F}\0005:" on the right pane, no folders or pictures are shown at all.

See the screenshot here.

Previously, there was a folder named DCM100 or something like that with all the pictures in it.

What goes wrong?

zwerfkat,

Thanks for reporting that.

My initial impression was that you must have an empty camera card, or the camera is not set to export the images, but I wanted to check first.
( I had never connected my camera to the USB port, preferring to remove the card and plug it into a card reader on a USB port )

I discovered that it is as you say:
The image files are invisible to x2-Pro v1.7.1.2

The files do show in every other file browser I checked:
x2-Lite v1.6.5.3 & 1.7.0.5
2xExplorer
Windows Explorer
Adobe photo downloader (starts automatically)

checking earlier versions of x2-Pro
v1.7.0.8 [debug] {and earlier} = good
v1.7.0.9 [debug] {and later} = fails to see the camera files
(i.e. x2 does not recognize the Class ID for the device/folder)

ref: checked on win XP-pro + sp2
camera = Canon 40D

thanks for the brilliant error reporting fred!

can you run the older one 1708 that works and see what's printed out when you browse the same folder?

Another problem I noticed before which might be related to this topic, is when pictures are present like in previous version 1.7.0.8, it was not possible to open them in my viewer IrfanView by double clicking on them (works well for Windows Explorer), nor they were showed in the Quick Viewer of xplorer2. Although I am not completely sure, (mass?)renaming was not possible as well.

OK here's the v1.7.0.8 dbmon log
I started x2 1.7.0.8[debug] with the camera connected, but with x2's left pane opening at My Computer in list view.
Then clicked on the Canon EOS device, which populated the folder pane with the camera files.

At this point, the camera files are displayed by name, but QV does not work (neither Draft nor Normal), nor do thumbnails show.
File size for extracting thumbnails is set to 0 (unlimited).
Another curiosity is that the file association is diverted:
Windoze Picture and FAX Viewer is invoked for .jpg's instead of the associated app.
  This in Win.Exploder and 2xExplorer and x2 v1708.

Correct: x2-Lite does not show thumbs.
Only win.Exploder does.

But there is another curious thing:
Both the saved .JPG files and the .CR2 camera RAW files appear on the list as .JPG's with identical names... and their location appears as a virtual folder at the cameracard root (vs where they are on the card [cardroot]\DCIM\100CANON\ when the camera card is plugged directly into a card reader)
There is also an empty MISC\ folder at the root in both cases. (this is normal)

the only camera i have (an older fuji) shows up as a drive, like when you plug a USB stick. These faults are caused because your cameras are somehow weird (like zipfolders say) and the problem with 1709 is the background threading that your camera doesn't like

when you see these pics with explorer, does its addressbar show any sort of recognizable path e.g. G:\misc or whatever?

Win.Explorer just shows the camera alias/label in the addressbar. For my case:
  • Canon Eos 40D
x2 1.7.0.8 displays the CLSID's with punctuation as:
  • ;;{E211B736-43FD-11D1-9EFB-0000F8757FCD}\devid:{6BDD1FC6-810F-11D0-BEC7-08002BE2092F}\0004:
x2 1.7.0.9 also displays displays the exact same data in the addressbar, but an empty folder pane.

PS - I just checked how an older camera (a Panasonic LUMIX FZ-20) appears when plugged into a USB port, and it just shows up as if its camera card were plugged into a card reader (same as you report for your FUJI).  And of course all versions of x2 read it OK.

does the "funny" camera show up from an MSDOS box somehow? Can you associate with it a normal filesystem path?

further question: when you press the [+] mark on the tree under this camera folder, do you see any subfolders? (in the tree). What happens if you click on them?
