Lock tabs?

Post by Number99 »

I'm sorry if this has been covered before but I'm pretty new to xplorer2 and I'd like to know if it's possible to lock my tabs? As I can do in Total Commander. I just can't figure out how to do it, therefore I ask here.

Not directly, unfortunately.  See this recent thread.

Well, there are at least four of us now that would like that feature.  Perhaps this overwhelming number will convince Nikos?

what I'll need to 'buy' this feature is an explanation of what's it's use?
can you tell me a situation where this locking is useful?
why don't you just 'don't touch' the tab, then it is effectively locked :)

Actually couple of years back, I tried *real* hard to get locked tab implemented in X2.

Unfortunately I was not able to convince Nikos.

Well, I like my favourite tabs to open whenever I start the program, and if I then need another tab, I just open a new one. Certainly useful for me  :)

on Tools | Options... | General
clear Save program state on exit
then, with your favourite tabs as you want them,
do Actions | Save settings now

Yes, I know about that, but if I've browsed away from my tabs I want to quickly find them again.

a couple of other ideas for workarounds you might find useful:

Save them as folder groups (one set for each folderpane)

or (as Tabs are practically bookmarks) you can put each of the folders in the mini-scrap pane for quicker access than pulling down the bookmark menu. Makes for convenient access, although only for the current Active pane.

"can you tell me a situation where this locking is useful?"  I believe snakebite already did an excellent job of this back in 2006.

Nikos and fgagnon have suggest "work arounds".  But these are much less convenient than having locked tabs which would display their locked status in the tap using a lock icon in place of the folder or disk icon.  I'm also assuming that one could lock and unlock tabs by R-clicking on the tab and selecting lock/unlock.

Yes, we users are lazy.  But now, isn't that the reason we choose to use x2 over windows explorer?

Hi,
If you have saved your tabs as folder groups, you can always restore them with “Customize | Folder groups”.

If you have closed all tabs before that (Ctrl+Shift+F4), you’ll get a pristine layout with your favorite tabs. :D

I'm a brand new user of the professional version and I'd like to also chime in support of a lock tab option.   Unfortunately, the tab feature is virtually useless to me in the absence of a locking option.   I would love to be able to easily go to and from specific folders using locked tabs.

I'm using the scrap pane for my favorite folders now, which is nice, but does not give me the ability to rename like tabs.

I really like the proggy and recognize the enormous amount of thought and effort that has gone into its development, but the ability to lock tabs seems to me to be an essential feature that is missing.

My "work around" which actually works pretty darn well for me is:
I use the "folder groups", with each group having a meaningful name.  Each group also gets its own button in one of the tool bars.  Also each group has at least one extra tab to the right of my "would've locked" tabs, for modifying without changing the 'wl' ones.

Hope this helps.
