Hi everyone.  Have a riddle and was wondering if anyone can help me figure it out.  I'm :confused: Any help woud be appreciated :)
Here it is:

'Twas in heaven pronounced, and 'twas muttered in hell,
An echo caught faintly the sound as it fell;
On the confines of earth 'twas permitted to rest,
And the depths of the ocean its presence confessed;
'Twill be found in the sphere when 'tis riven asunder,
Be seen in the lightning and heard in the thunder.
'Twas allotted to man with his earliest breath,
Attends him at birth, and awaits him in death,
Presides o'er his happiness, honor, and health,
Is the prop of his house, and the end of his wealth.
In the heaps of the miser 'tis hoarded with care,
But is sure to be lost on the prodigal heir.
It begins every hope, every wish it must bound,
With the husbandman toils, and with monarchs is crowned.
Without it the soldier, the seaman may roam,
But woe to the wretch who expels it from home!
In the whispers of conscience its voice will be found,
Nor e'en in the whirlwind of passion be drowned.
'Twill not soften the heart; but though deaf be the ear,
It will make it acutely and instantly hear.
Yet in shade let it rest, like a delicate flower,
Ah... breathe on it softly, - it dies in an hour.

Thanks everyone :love2:

Thanks Susie, :)  I sent a copy to a friend to help me figure it out.  Hopefully between all of us we can figure it out.  :cheesy:  I hate it when I can't figure something out.

I brought it into work today and I think my coworkers want to choke me... LOL Everyone thinks it's a great riddle and so far two guys have made some suggestions that might be close. The one guy thought the answer might be 'cry' and that there are different kind of cries - sad, happy, jubilent, silent to yourself, etc. The other one thought about 'surprise'. That everything in the poem would cause surprise, Though he does admit that last line kind of kills it. I was trying to think of a feeling or some kind of thought process. But I don't know if anyone is happy with what we came up with yet. I also have emailed it to a few people I know. I get the feeling that I have seen this somewhere before and that when I hear the answer, I'll go 'yeah, now I remember!' Where did you find this riddle?

Well after reading the riddle I thought it had something to due with minutes or seconds, but then I read the rest of the posts and Sal took all the mystery out of it :tongue:   Oh well, I probably would have gotten a headache trying to figure it out anyway.
Nice riddle.......Do we know that time is actually the correct answer?  Where did the riddle come from?

Not true. I found the answer and I posted it. After I posted the answer everone suddenly knows the answer. So if they knew the answer why didn't they post it? I know you all need someone to pick on, but to pick on the administrator that pays for the website and keeps everything going is just not fair. :cry:

Linda, yes the answer is time.  My son has a friend who tests him constantly on riddles, and assures us it is the right answer, :)
As for Sal, he does speak the truth,  :shocked: He did find the answer on his puter, (in the message I sent him in AOL. that is), then he posted it, :shifty:
When I figured out the answer, I thought I'd give everyone else a chance to try before letting them know. :)
Thanks everyone.  :love:
As for picking on someone, hmmmm Sal, you make it so easy :biggrin:  And trust me, not through yet :evilgrin:
And I can tell crockodile tears when I see them,  :rolleyes:  Try again. :wink:
By the way, Mr. Administrator, thanks for the website.  It is so :cool:  Keep up the good work, isn't that what we are paying you for :cheesy:  Fair, let's look that up in the dictionary :o

The poblem on this board is that there are too many women. Greatly out numbered so I'm going into hiding and do things behind the seen. :evilgrin:

I would have never guessed! In fact, with the last line in the poem, I'm still a little confused.... :confused: Guess I'll have to look at it closer. :)
