Select all files

Post by bloomfield »

There is a way to select all files and/or all sub-folders in a folder?

Crtl+A selects everything (All files & subfolders)
If folders are sorted separately, it's easy to 'throw a lasso' around just the folders, or just the files (see the User Manual for more detail)

PS - the keyboard equivalent to 'throw a lasso' is to navigate to one 'edge' of the range of items you wish to select, then hold down the Shift key & scroll to the end of the desired range with up or down arrow key. { & can use 'Home' to go all the way to the top entry in the pane, & use 'End' to go to the bottom entry (while holding down Shift to extend selection) -- especially useful in navigating large folders } :D

Or....

to select only files
hit Alt+J to hide all folders and then hit Ctrl+A to select all files (and folders, but since they are no longer visible they won't be a part of your selection)

so the sequence in short:
Alt+J, Ctrl+A

to select only folders
hit Alt+A to deselect all (to be sure nothing is selected, because selecting is additive) and then hit Alt+Ctrl+Q to select all folders.

Alt+A, Alt+Ctrl+Q

Enjoy! 8)

Ok thanks Alt+J, Ctrl+A will do the trick ;)

If the selection was kept after hiting Alt+J again it would have been great.

But from the informations provided by JRz another way to select the files whould be:

Ctrl+Alt+Q, *

Thanks again for your help.

PS: Shift+arrows or page up/down are also ok and I am using those a lot every day but I was looking for something faster.

In this case you should make sure you have nothing selected (using Alt+A)before you start, because using the Num* will toggle the selection state. So if you have any file selected and then hit Alt+Ctrl+Q and Num* the file(s) you had selected to begin with will be deselected!!

P.S. To 'keep' selections, you can use the F11 and its modifiers to store a selection and reapply that quickly on another folder or the same folder after applying a filter such as Alt+J. See the menu Mark.Selection>

Yes of course - as you pointed out Alt+A must be always used before.
