portability

many people complain about the lack of portability in xplorer2 (professional version, the lite one is  quite portable)

the problem is that a single executable combines the pre-purchase 21 day trial and the licencing code. But that limits the use possibilities for bona fide registered users

so i had this idea. There could be a special build that is private to a registered customer (it will include his name and details in the About box) which is in fully unlocked mode and can run off a USB stick on any machine, without requiring administrator privileges to install.

there will be a small fee to make these individual builds (say $10), since each one will be "hand made"

what do you think? free at last!?

so a version with the protection removed? a subject that is close to my heart...

but what about illegal distribution of this version? ok you will have the name of the licensee, and will revoke their license, but will this offset the loss of earnings when a version is widely distributed across the internet? or do you consider that with cracks already in existence, there is little difference?

well, i am putting a lot of trust to each registered user not to abuse his/her privilege, and the name/email on the about box should be a slight deterrant :)

well i think it is very nice to hear that you are trusting... perhaps i am more cynical, but i might suggest that this option be open to longer-standing license holders, otherwise a cracking group may be willing to pay the fee just to get a copy with no protection...

the flow of money on the black market can sometimes be surprising...

I like portable versions as much as anyone. But how would you handle updates if you hardcode the regdata?

that's one of my headaches, updates. I'll see how much volume and work this is, and if it is a big load the $10 should buy you X updates, after which point you'd have to cough up another tenner for unlocked versions

I'd be willing to cough up for a portable version. This is one of my can't live without programs

I'm in.

Are you also considering then a move to INI files and NO registrar data?

kind of. There will be a REG file you're carrying with you. But there isn't going to be any trace of it left in the PC after you quit the program. Nor will it require any admin privileges
