Thanks. Have downloaded the search prog. and given it a bit of publicity, asking for ß testers to assist, at http://www.donationcoder.com/forum/inde ... =37337.new

@nikos: Yes, it all helps. I would suggest that you check that DC (donationcoder) discussion forum for comments yourself, as the people making those comments will not necessarily put their comments in this forum of yours. Thus, you could miss seeing them altogether, if you didn't check the DC forum.

From the blurb it looks like an excellent product. I'm looking forward to trying it out!

Do you intend it to be part of xplorer²? I suspect not!

However, will it be possible to integrate it into xplorer² if it is purchased separately?

you can add it as a user command to xplorer2 using the $P token to pass the current folder to search in deskrule

I have used different kinds of desktop search. None is as good as the one integrated in Apple's "Finder". The best and fastest I've ever seen. But that's the only thing I like about Apple.
I don't know how it works, but if you can program anything like that for Windows, I want to have it!

Not impressed. I performed identical searches using Desktop Rulez and the built-in xplorer2 search engines, and the results aren't even close. In both cases, I performed a search for *.flac files in a directory that contains 12,290 folders and 113,021 files. Here are the results:

xplorer2: Returned 12870 resuts in 35 seconds. I've used the search engine in xplorer2 extensively, including complex rules, and found it to be very fast and 100% accurate, so I'm not surprised with this result.

Desktop Rulez: Returned 13003 results in 8 minutes, 20 seconds. I was actually able to get up, go make coffee and return, and it was still running. The extra results that were returned weren't *.flac files, they were any file that contained the string 'flac' in the file name. Now, everyone who uses a search engine know that when you specify *.(anything), you are looking for files with that extension, but this search engine doesn't seem to know that. Last thing I want, is to have to further filter out files that I don't want from this very basic search event.

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE do not replace the current search engine with this one. I love the current xplorer2 search engine, and it is THE reason why I purchased this product to begin with.

deskrule is not optimized for speed yet, but it will be as fast as xplorer2. You will find it really shines if you do special searches, not simple stuff like names

anyway, it is going to be a separate product, so you don't have to worry about xplorer2 :)

I like deskrule a lot. I have an alpha version. Make sense to download the beta version?

Does "deskrules" ...
Q1: find contents ?
Q2: filter for file types
Q3: depend on Windows indexing ?
Q4: maintain its own indexing database for subsequent searches ?
Q5: find system files ? (as quickly as "Everything" program does )

it searches everything, whereas your "everything" just searches names :)
in the future it will integrate with windows search, at present it only uses a "slow" search mode without any databases
