fast search by filename using only MFT?

Post by jimspoon »

Hi, I'm trying out Deskrule 2.0.0.1 trial edition. I've tried a few filename searches, running Deskrule as administrator. I thought this might get Deskrule to search using the MFT, so that I would get results as quickly as I do using Everything. Unfortunately this isn't happening. Deskrule seems to be "walking" through the directory tree in the usual "slow search" fashion. I have a lot that's not included in the Windows Search indexed locations, but shouldn't an MFT search return fast filename searches even on non-indexed files?

if you are running elevated as full administrator, and you search in a local folder (or my computer) and your search criterion is just a filename, then it should check the MFT. Look out for a message "searching MFT" on the statusbar

Even searching in MFT it is much slower than Everything

And it doesn't sort results by a chosen column as far as search is taken place.

you must compare like for like. If you turn on windows indexing for your folders, then deskrule will be much faster. In the end of the day, if you only search for filename, you cannot beat "everything". If you want other type of searches, and especially so for text content, you will find deskrule much better. See the comparison table at the bottom of the website

Yes, that was my experience too - for a search by filename Deskrule was much slower than Everything. looks like for a "filename only" search I'll need to stick with Everything. Maybe Deskrule will be improved in this regard. I have no idea how Everything can be so fast but it is indispensable to me.

Here are a few things and possible features that will be of great interest to me -

(1) speed of offline volume searching. I bought a file cataloging program called Wincatalog and made a catalog of an offline volume. The volume has a very large number of files. Wincatalog choked on attempts to search this offline volume, so that it was essentially useless for this purpose.

(2) any ability of duplicate file detection and management for online and offline volumes would be great.

(3) the ability to mount and index compressed volume files - ZIPS, ISOs, VHDs, mountable backup images (acronis .tib, macrium reflect .mrimg files) etc would be awesome.

But then again I realize I'm shooting for the moon with some of these suggestions.

did you try the deskrule catalog searching? www.zabkat.com/deskrule/catalog-offline-search.htm

if you don't go for cataloguing preview and extended attributes, building the catalog (and searching) should be quite fast.

I will see if it can be extended for all these mountable files, it's not a bad idea!

finally for duplicates, xplorer2 can do a pretty good job, at least for normal connected drives
