52 page document crashes Microsoft Word 2002 when scrolling?

I have a 52 page RTF document that contains a two column table that now crashes Word 2002 (Word XP) if I scroll down towards the bottom of it by dragging the scrollbar thumb. I can move through the document with page down and bookmarks, but dragging the scrollbar thumb causes Word to tell me it needs to close and then it opens and recovers the document. I wonder if Word can't keep up when smooth scrolling though a long document of a size that I apparently reached in the past few days.

I have already run repair on the document with no change. Any ideas? I at least want to know if this is a problem with long documents and doesn't effect the shorter ones which are in the majority.

Word 2002 does everything I could ever want and I really don't like the Ribbon the few times I've used it. I can't see any advantages in Word 2003.

Same problem with Wordpad?

You could also save the document wit a new filename and load this one and test. The same with converting to a DOC-file. (Or use OpenOfffice)
