My CD muisic database started out many years ago on a Mac in Filemaker Pro 2, moved to Provue, then when I came to Windows wound up in Microsoft Works. All the talk of SQL gives me a headache. I probably don't even need a relational database. I'm trying to avoid the extra apps and size of downloading Open Office or Libre Office, which usually get recommended. I would like a list view and record view. The main reason I don't just use a Microsoft Word (2002) table is queries.
I posted this question on Yahoo Answers a few days ago and all I am getting is recommendations for MySQL, Server Express, the type of database programs that are too complex for me to understand.
I have since installed LibreOffice, but there was no way to import my data into Base without it being read-only. It is on the edge of being too complicated. A program called Glom looked promising, but I couldn't get it to work.
I just find it hard to believe there isn't something open source which is a bit better than Microsoft Works and more like Filemaker.
Recommend a Free simple Database program for Windows XP?

Have you considered using a specialist product like MediaMonkey, it has a freeware version and a "Gold" (payware) version, similar to x2. http://anonym.to/?http://www.mediamonkey.com/
Might be easier than messing around with generic datobase products, unless of course your that way inclined a'la Ratty. There may be some others
This is not a recommendation, merely a suggestion, I have no interest, pecuniary or otherwise in MediaMonkey.

I've been looking for something similar to manage my movie database and agree that good free (relational) database software is a bit thin on the ground.
I'd forgotten about MediaMonkey but will certainly reinvestigate it. However, my choices at present for my video collection are:
1) Ant Movie Catalog. Highly configurable, freeware, even the source is provided. An active forum, with members adapting it for use as a music (or any other) database system. Written in Delphi.
2) FileMaker Pro. Not cheap but the most user-friendly relational database (RDB) software I've seen.
3) AZZ Cardfile. Now shareware but last freeware version available. Good if all you need is a simple card file.
4) Base, the RDB component of OpenOffice. You need to know a bit about how an RDB works, but it is free.
5) An open source RDB such as MySQL or Apache, for which there are numerous front-ends.
