RSS

Post by nikos »

i've just had it with email notifications for x2 updates :x
failed addresses, spam blocks, just too much hassle!

i want to add an RSS feed to the site so that people can subscribe and get notified immediately of changes in the content

since i don't know the first thing about RSS, i would appreciate if some experienced person would confirm what i think needs to be done:

* create an XML file for the "news" according to the standard format
* put a button for it on the main page
* whenever there are news just change this XML file

it would seem quite simple and no special software required other than a simple text editor

is this correct?
are there any special buttons i should add so that people can automatically get the feeds into their readers?

thanks

In Firefox, using the extension Sage:

Edit
------

Comments/questions
  • It is valid according to the FEED Validator (which only suggests using a GUID for the items)
  • The links in the body are not clickable (a href is needed)
  • Why don't you use ² for the exponent?
btw, I'm not a big fan of RSS feeds, and I sometimes prefer the old-fashioned e-mail (I certainly prefer an email notification in the case of x2).

Sorry!

I played around with a test feed, and these three seem to work:

* Alt+0178
* & # 1 7 8 ; (spaces added to avoid rendering)
* ²

The links are still plain text. I guess you didn't upload the new one?

Success! I just tried the XML link by dragging it into my Sage sidebar in Firefox 1.5.0.6.

However, I don't usually look at RSS feeds. RSS doesn't appeal to me.

I guess I'll keep up to date the way I always have - visiting this forum regularly :D

It does!

Sorry; I was looking within the body yesterday, I didn't notice you said "once".

Now there are three in total:

* xplorer2 news
* xplorer2 version 1.6 released
* http://zabkat.com/x2down.htm

Greetings!

Pulled the rss feed into thunderbird. That seems to work, but it gave the whole page with the news visible. I'm doing something wrong, because it is not only the 1.6 message that is shown in the message in this thread, but the whole page.

Works fine with Maxthon. The "xplorer² news" heading has to be double clicked.
Only one slight glitch in the feed: the last 2 URL links are text-only (http://zabkat.com/x2lite.htm and http://zabkat.com/x2buy.htm).
It is a bit unfortunate for http://zabkat.com/x2buy.htm  :(
