that eclipse filter doesn't look very useful but what do you expect from a dialog-based property page? That's why I want to have the newer property page style instead

Keep in mind that the preferences tree is built dynamically according to the filter - and according to the config items in the category (ie, "filter" is obviously not part of the text string "Compare/Patch", but that settings group has a "filtered members" option).

Filtering would be a useful feature no matter which GUI style you end up with :)

Combo, definitely.

And if possible, filter too.

A dynamically built filter, although desirable, may be difficult to build.

The filter should work on the tree on left AND the list on right.
* If the keyword is there in a node, that node and all its subnodes should be displayed. All the pages should be shown on right.
* If the keyword is there in a parameter on the right, show the entire page (because it may be interrelated to other parameters).

This would also lessen the demands on the coding.

*******
If the dynamic filter mode is not possible with the COMBO design (because of the tree), then how about a "search" facility? The usual F3 should take us through all matches. Nothing is filtered out.

Can we add a column on the right, where each parameter is described?
Then the search would be even more effective.

I like it.

And users should appreciate the verbose description of usage & consequences for options where a name/label cannot say it all.

Users and the posthumous Shakespeare (a rose by any other label...)

Oh, sorry; off-topic.  I'm bored again.  Sorry.
