Keep in mind that the preferences tree is built dynamically according to the filter - and according to the config items in the category (ie, "filter" is obviously not part of the text string "Compare/Patch", but that settings group has a "filtered members" option).nikos wrote:that eclipse filter doesn't look very useful but what do you expect from a dialog-based property page? Filtering would be a useful feature no matter which GUI style you end up with
Combo, definitely.
And if possible, filter too.
A dynamically built filter, although desirable, may be difficult to build.
The filter should work on the tree on left AND the list on right.
* If the keyword is there in a node, that node and all its subnodes should be displayed. All the pages should be shown on right.
* If the keyword is there in a parameter on the right, show the entire page (because it may be interrelated to other parameters).
This would also lessen the demands on the coding.

If the dynamic filter mode is not possible with the COMBO design (because of the tree), then how about a "search" facility? The usual F3 should take us through all matches. Nothing is filtered out.
Can we add a column on the right, where each parameter is described?
Then the search would be even more effective.
