i can't think of anything similar to ID3 tags for pictures, but as these are most likely coming from your camera they won't be duplicate, and if they are at worst a comparison by content (if not just by simple name/size) should be enough to locate any duplicates
I was thinking of paintings and illustrations. It's a pain to find duplicate content as I got a lot of them on my hard drive and don't remember what I did find when surfing But I suppose it needs particular algorithm for such things.

there are many exciting algorithms for recongizing similarity in pictures or sounds. One could use neural networks for such pattern recognition. I wonder how practical that would be though for checking a few thousands of files, it could take ages!
DuplicateFilesDeleter is a simple, but effective tool to locate duplicate files in one or more selected search paths. It scans the files and compares them based on Byte for Byte Comparison, which ensures 100% accuracy. You can then choose to delete the selected duplicate or original files. The program is multi-threaded and performs scans quickly.
