Smarter rename
Is there a way to build-in any file name checks in rename function (F2 or slow double click)? Currently if I paste a name of a book, which usually contains a colon, and press "enter" an error message box pops up saying that there is an error (hi Captain Obvious!) and then I have to dismiss it, and then I have to click once on a filename because it is selected as a whole, and then I have to locate where colon is (not so simple in long filenames!) and then sometimes when I fix and press "enter" there is a message box again - I have missed another forbidden symbol!!! You know what? If I do the same operation in windows explorer - it behaves smart as a hell doing all magic for me. Xplorer2 has to catch up.
Re: Smarter rename
if instead of F2 you do a "mass rename" from FILE menu, this corrects for any illegal characters.
Re: Smarter rename
You mean each time I want to rename single file I have to go to File->open Mass rename->fill the pattern and then press "enter"... And all this to avoid one redundant message box in regular order?
What about improving usability in-place?

Re: Smarter rename
now you don't have to do it every time, only those times that you want to break the laws of renaming

Re: Smarter rename
I think removing or replacing illegal characters when using F2 rename would be a useful improvement.
Re: Smarter rename
"The laws of renaming"??? Are you still living in 1990th? The user is king now, nobody cares what is under the hood, the application either delivers or not.
Re: Smarter rename
I also agree this improvement will be useful for F2 rename. I have lots of instances where ":" is included in the string pasted in for rename. Deleting invalid characters automatically will be helpful. Even better would be to provide a substitution list of characters to replace the invalid characters.

ah yes, what's the point of a good file manager if not to promote sloppiness
we'll see for the next version that will do a renaming uphaul

Re: Smarter rename
As I explained to my engineers regarding why they needed to make extra effort to create mistake-proof or more manufacturable designs: "You do this ONCE, but Production | End-User will be dealing with this HUNDREDS or THOUSANDS of times".nikos wrote:ah yes, what's the point of a good file manager if not to promote sloppiness
The end-user multiplier trumps the lazy engineer / designer every time
By the way (and I know I shouldn't ask ) how's the simple substitution capability for mass-rename coming along? You know, that little tid-bit that was requested by the masses a (long) while back?

Re: Smarter rename
Well, here we are 4 plus years and two full revisions later and I still have to manually remove invalid characters when pasting a string in to replace "New folder" when I press F8 to create a folder.

Re: Smarter rename
mass renaming automatically removes invalid chars, as professed, but plain renaming doesn't. Are you trying to file a new request?
Re: Smarter rename
So if you implemented the filter in F2 renaming, where's the logic to leave it out of F7/F8 naming/renaming? The invalid characters can't be in the final name, so toss them and show a note in the info bar that you did and move on.
So anyway, whether this s a new request, bump of an old request, or just a waste of time, an improvement in F7 / F8 naming would be appreciated...

Re: Smarter rename
the idea is that mass rename inserts text without the user's supervision, so it needs to be "governed", whereas a simple F2 rename is user-controlled. Anyway i'll add this, automatically removing illegal stuff
