Folder size: stop disappearing; options confusion

Two questions on folder size:

1) Is there a way to make the folder sizes in the details pane display permanently instead of what they do now, which is disappear every time you go away from the folder in question and then come back? I understand there are warnings all over the place about how they slow everything down but in certain situations I strongly need non-disappearing folder sizes. I don't understand why the sizes disappear and have to be recalculated which can take from 30 seconds to 3 whole minutes, for a dozen or two folders, when I only went away from the folder in question for 5 seconds or so and didn't make any changes.

2) Can someone explain the difference between these 3 options involving folder size and how they interact and are there any other folder size settings I haven't listed here?

Tools > Options > Advanced > Show total folder size
Tools > Options > Advanced > Calculate subfolder size automatically
Tools > Subfolder size
