Error Msg - There was a problem sending the command to the program

Post by dave9 »

Noticed this on ver. 5.4.0.2 lite, on Win7

If I attempt to open two folders, doesn't matter if I right-click and choose Open with xplorer2, or if it is just clicking two different shortcuts to folders, if the 2nd click happens within about 2-3 seconds, it generates the popup error message: There was a problem sending the command to the program

I can easily reproduce this doing the exact same sequence, waiting a few seconds between clicks and it works w/o error, then not waiting 2-3 seconds and it then produces the popup message. When I get the popup message it does open the folder.

The system has been rebooted and it made no difference, has no other disk or slowness issues, works fine otherwise.

Upon doing a search, I saw the other topic for the pro version where someone reported that they had two instances of xplorer2 open at the time of the error, but in this case Task Manager does not show two instances open.

is your system 64 bit? It could be that the problem is the 32-bit lite version (?)
have you tried the professional version for the same situation? Does it work or fails the same?

It is the 32bit lite version I'm seeing this on.

It was happening on a 32bit Win7, but I tested again on a 64bit Win7 and it also happens there. It may take a shorter pause to see it on the 32bit, but I can easily replicate it doing something like highlight two folders, right-click and choose "Open with explorer2". First window opens normally, 2nd window generates the error message popup box (but also opens).

I just tried the (almost) latest Ultimate 6.1.0.0 x64 trial version (not the 6.1.0.1 released 3 days ago), and it does the exact same thing.

An easy way I can replicate it, is just open my C: volume, select 3 folders, right click and choose open with xplorer2, or another way to replicate it is if I have a couple of folder shortcuts in my taskbar quick launch area, if I click one of them (standard left mouse click to open, not right click for a menu), then don't wait a couple seconds or more before clicking another folder shortcut, then I get same popup window message "There was a problem sending the command to the program", with no other text besides the folder path in the title pane of the popup window, and an "OK" button to dismiss the popup window.

If I select, say 10 folders to right-click open with Xplorer2, then every other folder that opens, pops up an additional instance of this error message, so trying to open 10 folders in same event, pops up this message 5 times.

I have never seen this popup window message before with any other applications.

While I have your attention, it would nice if a certain Xporer2 setting was labeled differently to help people understand the significance of it. The setting is "Faster network access with plain icons etc".

Faster access seems nice, and I don't care about plain icons, but missing is the important information that this also disables showing the amount of free space on the network volume, which is something I often want to know but it wasn't obvious that Xplorer2 can do this, because of that setting being toggled on. Plus I don't really notice any network access slowdown with it toggled off.

This is really, REALLY terrible support, almost like a nonsense excuse.

If you cannot replicate it because it's not win7, then don't claim it is win7 compatible without listing the incurred BUGS when doing so.

This is exactly why I wouldn't buy a license, because the trial shows this problem. Fair is fair, I don't mind that this is what a trial is for, but the crappy support excuse is intolerable.

How about you not make excuses like can't replicate when I can replicate it every single time with an otherwise perfectly working win7 installation?

It's not rocket surgery, if you don't want to support win7 then just don't claim it's supported, or at least list a strongly linked list of things that won't work on win7. I'd glad that your trial version exposed this before I became disgruntled after buying a license, but I suspect many people wouldn't realize this problem until after daily driving it for a while.

This has to be something that can be fixed, I'm trying to take a positive attitude about it, even if the above text implies otherwise. If I didn't think the explorer replacement was useful, I wouldn't have bothered.

I tried again on windows 7, no problem opening folders. But I did manage to see the message "error sending the command..." when trying to open a downloaded file. So there is some glitch in this department.

windows 7 is an old system and frankly not a priority. Also this glitch doesn't mean that xplorer2 doesn't work on win7; you merely need to open xplorer2 and do the browsing and file management within the program instead of relying on external "open with" commands

I will add this in my list of things to check, but I have a lot of other more important things to do, sorry!
