Thanks, changing the icon font works a treat.

In all the years i've been using windows, I've never looked to deeply into this part of customisation. Something else to play with now.

philip, the log suggests that reading c:\windows never finishes
can you read this folder at all? (I mean without the titlebar complication)

Weird. I can through 2x, but NOT through x2 (with or without the pane title bars turned on. Well actually I just found I could in x2 it just takes forever. I assumed the system had frozen but it was just taking minutes to complete the operation, whereas in 2x it's instantaneous.
