i wonder what's different on your system, others seem to be doing fine...
anyway, since you are in software and all why don't you try this debug version of the program?
www.zabkat.com/dbmon.zip
it has instructions how to get the debug output; then select a raw file and see what error message is printed by the previewer. Btw i take it that you can neither see thumbnails nor previews in teh quickviewer(draft) right?

The quick view [draft preview] does show the raw files.

I'm afraid I hadn't been having much success with Dbmon and kenny but I seem to be getting somewhere now. Kenny was just bombing out on launch and nothing was coming up in dbmon.

Anyway, slightly more useful maybe is..

I unzipped the archive and copied the files to "C:\Program Files\Xplorer2_dbg"

I shut down xplorer2 and used Windows Explorer to launch the dbmon link. I then launched kenny and it gave a couple of assertion messages selecting retry or abort resulting in the windows error reporting dialog. Selecting ignore gives further assertions.

First time running I got these two assertions.
nameList.cpp : 1602 : hfl.GetCount()
namelist.h : 113 :  m_strHelpFmt.GetLength()......

Each subsequent time I just got the second assertion.

I was already in one of my directories containing RAW files and was on mini thumbnail view. Kenny repeatedly gives further assertions but the images show.
I switched to thumbnail view and this gave assertions but no thumbnails.

Output from DBmon below for the described run.

these assertion errors are skippable with ingore button, as you discovered. You are getting a lot more than usual since these RAW files are behaving "funny"

anyway, this has reminded me that i have fixed a similar problem for another file type, so if you get the new beta 1609 you should be fine, without the assertions

btw the reason why the large thumbnails didn't work appears to be that you've run out of memory (?). When xplorer2 shows a lot of thumbnails in large folders memory usage shoots right up!

if it happens again please check the free memory available from your task manager

memory usage will drop as soon as you get out of the folder, no worries. If you want to remain in the same folder hit refresh <ctrl+r> and the memory will go down also

I am definitely not running out of memory. Memory usage is around the 1gig mark in a machine with 2gig. In fact it's hard to see explorer2 using any significant amount of memory whilst thumbnailing in amongst the resource hogs on my machine.

I've downloaded and installed the 1.6.0.9 beta and it crashes in thumbnail view, but mini thumb view works fine.

For now I'll keep running this beta and try to remember to not put it into thumbnail view when I'm in a directory of RAWs. Mini thumbs is a definite improvement over no thumbs.

Would it be useful for me to send you a few of my RAW images?

I also have some CR2 RAW files from a CANON EOS350D, which I suspect will suffer the same issue, though I will check sometime soon.

Note that you can change the minthumbnail size by editing value for registry key nThumbMini100
100 (decimal) will make it same as regular thumbnail
33 (decimal) will make it 1/3 size {the value I prefer because many of my picture-folders have 100's of images}
You can even enlarge the "mini" thumb using a setting of over 100% :!:

PS - rather than emailing samples of the problem images you may want to post a few on a free file-sharing site such as http://www.sendspace.com/ and then post the link here so others can get them and try to duplicate the issue or describe settings that work for us.  And posting an archived format (such as zip) of the file will assure the original file gets transferred "as-is" (vs being manipulated as on typical photo sharing sites).

PPS - Microsoft claims that the following image types and cameras creating them are supported in Build 50 of the RAW image viewer, as excerpted from Viewing and Organizing RAW Images in Windows XP.doc:
This release of the RAW Image Thumbnailer and Viewer supports most models of Canon and Nikon cameras capable of RAW capture, including the latest professional models such as the Canon EOS 1Ds Mark II and Nikon D2x. A complete list of supported cameras is provided {below}

The software supports the following image types:

Thanks for the MiniThumb info.

I appreciate the other pointers, but I am well in advance of these.

I would never consider sending anyone a 6 meg+ email without prior approval :) . Any passing of data I would usually ask the recipient which format (if an option) and which method of transport they would prefer. This is why I say send rather than email.

I would also never use any of the image hosting services I have seen, for RAW images, as none of them would know what to do with RAW and most would reject them as invalid file formats.

I have several file hosts around the net. I will attempt to put up some links to some example images for others to abuse, and I shall try to be more specific when I say things so as to not cause confusion.

There are several cameras that are supported by the RAW thumbnailier that are not on that list (though mine is on the list [Digital Rebel EOS300D]) even though the cameras existed when MS released the build 50. MS are pretty bad at keeping documentation up to date (not surprising considering the amount of documentation they have to maintain), but then who isn't :) .

Another point that shouldn't make any difference but maybe I should mention is that I am using hacked firmware on my camera so as to get access to features the camera has but that are not availble to access through the standard UI. (the hack is only one bit and simply opens up options for camera models that this firmware is shared with)

I definitely have RAW support on my system for the RAW format my camera uses, it is simply how xplorer2 is dealing with it that is the issue.

@ but I am well in advance of these ...

I suspected such; but occasionally pointing out the obvious is useful.
... not to mention that other less advanced users following this thread in silence may benefit. :)

i can't see why mini thumbs are working and normal thumbs crash. They share the exact same code, the only difference is the bitmap size. How big are your big thumbnails?

btw when i was talking about memory usage, you should check that when x2 refuses to make more thumbnails, as you have described during the debug testing

I think you are on to somethign here.

My thumb size was set to 196, the default I use in all thumbnail views in applications if I have the option.

I reduced it to 128 initially and still no thumbs were rendered. I then reduced it down to 96 (which is close to the size of the mini thumbs when thumbnail size is set to 196) on the basis of if it's a bitmap/memory issue and it's using the same code then when the code in thumb mode is producing similar sized thumbs to the working mini thumbs it should work.

It did...

But (never that simple is it) I can set the thumbnail size to 500 and minithumbs still work.

I'm at work, so I'll test more later.

thanks for all these tests
can you please send me the dr watson log for the crashes of 1609 to see where they occur? There must be some explanation -- perhaps a wacky one

Sorry, been away for a few days. My girlfriend's graduation.

I'm going to try and run some more tests later today.

I have however noticed with the 1609 version that sometimes (and I can't work out yet a way to reproduce reliably) memory usage is extremely excessive when listing CRW files in details mode. An example was with a directory containing 9 CRW files and it's taking an age to scan through, presumably decide what file type they are and what Icon to use for them. Once the icons are all set it drops cpu usage to 0% again from 98%. However memory usage is in the 1.2gig range.

I then closed xplorer2 and did the same test (dual pane, first window in a top level directory of directories in details mode, second window in details mode looking at the same 9 CRW files.) and this time no excessive memory usage. Went up to about 48 meg and then dropped back down to 33meg.

I also cannot at the moment replicate the crashes. I just see the same behaviour as with the 1601 release. IE thumbnails do not show for RAWs and memory usage is about the same in thumbs mode as in details mode.

At the moment I am running these tests with no other user applications running, when I was testing the other day I was already using about a gig of memory with other apps and the OS. Currently mem usage is at 420meg. this would mean if the memory spikes had been happening when I was doing a lot of other things then those spikes might have caused the crash.

I will try stress testing later and dig out the Drwtsn32.log file if I can cause crashes again.

As far as the 'Wacky' reasons go, I'd say it is possible, but in defence this is a laptop that is at standard spec and from a reliable wholesaler (work computer, and I work for a systems build and integration company). The memory is Crucial RAM and is brand new (as in less than 3 months old and passes several hours of memtest86 tests fine.)

For the most part this laptop is very stable, though I have to once again mention I have had some driver issues with my network and the docking station in recent weeks. These have gone away after several driver re-installations though and all the directories I am referencing are on the local HD.

in the meantime you may want to grab the latest build 1650 which although unlikely to make any difference, is the new standard version
